Although the historical events the book covers are well known, Mantel still manages to make it into a page-turner. How can that be? I think partly it’s due to her use of the present tense. Unusual, especially for historical novels, but it gives the story an immediacy and the reader the feeling of being there, watching events unfold. Also, she tells the story not just of the end of Anne Boleyn, but reveals how, in a public arena encompassing all of Europe, base motives can be brought to fruition without anyone mentioning the emperor’s state of undress.
